Job Description

POSITION: Legal Counsel – SEA

LOCATION: Malaysia (Puchong)

REPORTING LINE: Group Legal & Compliance Officer and Managing Director SEA

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

The Legal Counsel will play a critical role in managing legal affairs within the SEA region, by providing expert guidance on compliance, contracts, legal risks, and regulatory issues. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with various business units in SEA to support strategic initiatives and ensure legal compliance across operations.

MOBILITY: 10-15% of time

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Legal Compliance
  • Ensure that the company's operations are compliant with local, regional and international laws and regulations.
  • Management of Staubli's legal entities administration matters across SEA countries. Working with company's secretariat or local authority to ensure up to date compliance.
  • Keep abreast of legal changes and update internal policies accordingly.
  • Regulatory Affairs
  • Interact with governmental agencies and regulatory bodies.
  • Advise on regulatory requirements and compliance strategies.
  • Corporate Governance
  • Ensure implementation of corporate governance and best practices.
  • Support management board meetings and ensure compliance with legal requirements.
  • Internal Policy Development
    • Develop internal policies to ensure legal compliance across the organization.
    • Train stakeholders/employees on relevant legal issues and company policies.
    • Risk Management
    • Identify potential legal risks and work with relevant stakeholders to mitigate them.
    • Develop and implement strategies for risk prevention.
    • Contract Management
    • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts and agreements with clients, suppliers, and partners.
    • Ensure contracts are legally sound and protect the company's interests.
    • Litigation Management
    • Represent the company in legal proceedings and manage external legal counsel when necessary.
    • Handle disputes, negotiate settlements and resolve conflicts efficiently.
    • Data Protection and Privacy
    • Ensure compliance with data protection laws (such as GDPR).
    • Develop privacy policies and respond to data breaches.

  • Stakeholders Communication
    • Liaise with stakeholders to manage legal and compliance issues effectively.
    • Act as an intermediary for legal communication between departments.
    • Advisory Role
    • Provide legal advice to senior management and other departments.
    • Assist in decision-making processes with legal implications.
    • Intellectual Property Management
    • Part of global legal team to support Staubli's trademark and intellectual property management.

    Qualifications

    • Juris Doctor (JD) degree or equivalent legal qualification from a recognized institution.
    • Experience of practice law in Malaysia or at least one jurisdiction within the SEA region.
    • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a similar role, ideally focus in commercial law or multi-disciplinary law firm.
    • Proven experience in contract negotiation, compliance, and general commercial law.
    • Strong understanding of legal challenges and regulatory landscapes within the SEA region.
    • Excellent problem solving, analytical, and communication skills.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
    • Fluency in English; proficiency in other local language(s) is an advantage.
