Position Summary

The Senior Legal Counsel is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing critical legal and compliance functions across the Group. This position works closely with committees, departments, management teams, C-suite executives, and the Board to ensure full compliance with applicable laws and ethical standards. The role involves driving compliance initiatives, delivering strategic legal advice, and providing guidance and mentorship to junior legal team members.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee the Group's compliance framework, ensuring alignment with all relevant regulatory and statutory requirements.

  • Develop, review, and implement internal policies and procedures in support of the Group's strategic objectives.

  • Partner with cross-functional teams to resolve complex legal matters while enabling business growth.

  • Act as the Group's legal representative in engagements with external stakeholders and the Board.

  • Deliver legal training and advisory support to internal teams across the organization.

  • Monitor regulatory developments and provide timely advice on potential business impact.

  • Manage and continuously enhance the Group's compliance programme to ensure effective execution.

  • Draft, review, and negotiate complex commercial agreements, corporate documents, and Board resolutions.

  • Identify legal risks proactively and implement practical, commercially aligned mitigation strategies.

  • Advise on and manage litigation, arbitration, and administrative proceedings, including case strategy and supervision of external counsel.

  • Contribute to departmental planning, including goal setting, budgeting, legal spend oversight, and strategic initiatives.

  • Support capability building within the legal function through mentoring and knowledge sharing.

  • Handle ad-hoc legal matters and undertake additional responsibilities as assigned by management to meet evolving business needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Law.

  • Admitted to the Bar.

  • At least nine (9) years of progressive experience in legal compliance, corporate governance, and public-listed company matters, ideally gained within a reputable law firm or large corporate environment.

  • Minimum five (5) years of experience advising or managing external clients in a law firm setting, with exposure to corporate transactions, M&A, and listing exercises.

  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage complex, high-value legal matters.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders across all levels of the organization.

  • Sound legal acumen combined with strategic thinking, strong leadership qualities, ethical integrity, and a pragmatic, solutions-driven approach.

  • Proficient in English, Mandarin, and Bahasa Malaysia. Mandarin proficiency is essential due to regular interaction with Mandarin-speaking stakeholders.
